Deploying your licence key

SepiaDoc works with a Business License key that matches the headcount on your licence. You can install it directly on each machine or deploy it across all systems using your IT tools. The software validates the key locally without any internet requirement.

One computer

  1. Open SepiaDoc and click the i button at the top right (About).
  2. Choose Enter licence key.
  3. Paste the whole key from your email, from -----BEGIN SEPIADOC LICENSE----- to -----END SEPIADOC LICENSE-----, or open the key file.

Every computer, with Group Policy or Intune

Set this registry value on each computer. SepiaDoc reads it at start-up.

  • Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\SepiaDoc
  • Value: LicenseKey, type REG_SZ or REG_MULTI_SZ
  • Data: the whole key, BEGIN to END (line breaks are optional)

The same value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER works too, for one person.

With PowerShell, as an administrator (or in an Intune script):

$key = Get-Content -Raw "C:\path\to\your.sepiadoc-license.txt"
$policy = "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\SepiaDoc"
if (-not (Test-Path $policy)) { New-Item -Path $policy | Out-Null }
Set-ItemProperty -Path $policy -Name LicenseKey -Value $key

Only create the key when it isn't there yet, as above: New-Item -Force on a key that already exists empties it, and would remove any other SepiaDoc policy you have set.

Every computer, with a file

Copy the key file to %ProgramData%\SepiaDoc\license.key on each computer, for example with a login script or your software deployment tool.

Which key wins

SepiaDoc uses the first key that checks out, in this order: the machine policy, the user policy, the ProgramData file, then a key someone typed in.

Trying a rollout first

To see exactly what people on company computers will see, set the environment variable SEPIADOC_SIMULATE_ORGANIZATION to your company's name on a test PC before starting SepiaDoc. It can only add the company rules, never remove them.

Automatic updates

From version 0.9.3, SepiaDoc checks download.sepiadoc.com about once a day, downloads a new version in the background, confirms it is signed by Mako Logics LLC, and installs it when the person closes SepiaDoc. If you would rather roll out updates yourself, switch this off for every computer with a policy next to the licence key:

  • Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\SepiaDoc
  • Value: AutomaticUpdates, type REG_DWORD
  • Data: 0 to switch automatic updates off, 1 to keep them on
$policy = "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\SepiaDoc"
if (-not (Test-Path $policy)) { New-Item -Path $policy | Out-Null }
Set-ItemProperty -Path $policy -Name AutomaticUpdates -Value 0 -Type DWord

The policy wins over the setting in About, and SepiaDoc greys that setting out and says your organization chose it. People can still press Check for updates themselves.

Renewals

A yearly licence comes with a new key each year, emailed when the renewal is paid. Replace the old key with the new one the same way. SepiaDoc allows 14 days after the end date before it asks for the new key, so a renewal paid a little late doesn't interrupt anyone.
